Steep decline in Japan's trade surplus in January, combined with rising oil prices, raises concerns that economic slump that began in 2004 could continue into 2005; merchandise trade surplus dropped 60 percent from January year ago, to 200.76 billion yen ($1.92 billion); export growth slowed unexpectedly, rising just 3.2 percent from year earlier; imports rose 11.6 percent; Japan's exports to China, including Hong Kong, rose 12 percent, to 829 billion yen ($7.9 billion) in January, after 9 percent growth in December; Japan had deficit with China of 122 billion yen ($1.16 billion), 91 percent increase over January 2003; surplus with US shrank 4.4 percent, to 470 billion yen ($4.5 billion), while its surplus with European Union dropped 34 percent, to 145 billion yen (M)
