Strikes Reflect the Crisis Facing Newspapers in France

Comment on crisis facing French press; during wk of June 1 all Paris papers were struck for 24 hrs; walkout at Le Parisien Libere has been in effect since May 7; Le Figaro is up for sale; France-Soir is without managing editor and Agence Frence Presse is without gen mgr; press is feeling effects of rising labor, paper and printing costs and competition of TV; some newspaper staffs, labor unions and left opposition charge that Govt is moving to strengthen control over press; Govt has monopoly in TV and thus controls 3 exisiting channels; Henri Amouroux, recently dismissed as managing editor of France-Soir, was close to Gaullist pres candidate in last election, Jacques Chaban-Delmas, Jean Gorni, his designated successor, is thought to be closer to Pres Valery Giscard d'Estaing; most portenous change may be 1 expected at head of Agence France Presse which is managed under setup designed to safeguard Govt interests while preserving ind from pol interference; on Apr 10 it was announced that Gen Mgr Jean Marin would not be candidate for re-election beacuse of his age; although he was not fired, Govt reptdly did nothing to persuade him to stay (M)
